Welcome

A message from Tracey Lee – Chief Executive

Thank you for your interest in Plymouth City Council and in joining our Corporate Management Team.

There could not be a more important time for our organisation. As Chief Executive I have been hugely proud of our ongoing response to COVID-19 and support provided as a result of the recent sad events that took place in our city. We pride ourselves on our partnership working and this has gone from strength to strength during these difficult times.

The City Council plays a central leadership role in place shaping, and facilitating effective systems leadership. We have a hugely exciting growth programme for the city with strengths in marine engineering, cultural industries and health and care. We are home to the first national marine park and have recently opened The Box, a £47M new regional museum and arts centre. Our children and young people are key to our long term success. We want them to have the best start in life, feel and be safe and healthy, be well educated and have the skills to thrive.

As Strategic Director for Children’s Services you will build on the improvements we have already made across Children’s Social Care and the education landscape to ensure that all children and young people have better life chances. We want to be an outstanding Council and are determined to get there. We have continued to work with partners to implement and sustain positive improvements including a successful PAUSE project, an Adolescent Support Team, working successfully to support young people on the Edge of Care and a strong commitment to a whole council approach to corporate parenting and support for care leavers.

Earlier in the year it was announced that Plymouth had been selected to pioneer a new approach to driving up attainment and standards in schools through greater place-based collaboration. We know there are many challenges in improving the educational achievements for all children and young people in Plymouth, and we do not underestimate these. This initiative will support us in facing these head on and achieving our vision that all children and young people in the city are able to aspire and achieve and have a bright future.

There are still many challenges ahead in the current local and national context for children’s services, but Plymouth is a dynamic and outward looking place to face them. If you are someone who has vision, creativity, passion and resilience with an absolute focus on innovative improvement, you will play an important part in writing the next chapter of our organisation’s journey and I have no doubt that you will be very proud of what you help us achieve.
